Frequently-Asked Questions

Here you will find the most frequently asked questions from customers about products and services from silicon systems. Some questions concern all devices and others are device-specific marked as such in the corresponding category.

Installation

To install a new device, it is sufficient to connect it to a PoE network switch. However, the configuration in the network can be more difficult and depends on the security standards in the network.

Why can the connected device not be found in the network?

To check whether the new device has been assigned a valid IP address, we recommend using the silicon systems Device Manager. Here you can see at a glance whether the device is visible in the network and all network parameters such as subnet mask or gateway address are clearly displayed.

If the device does not appear in the Device Manager, it is possible that the device is using a static IP address that is not valid in the used network. New delivered devices use DHCP to get an IP address assigned automatically. For configuration details, please refer to the programming manuals of the individual devices.

If the problem persists, please contact the network administrator. It is possible that the MAC address must first be enabled in the network. This address is clearly visible on the housing.

Can I use a device without a PoE switch?

All devices are powered exclusively by PoE. This allows a fast and simplified installation, because only one LAN cable has to be connected. If no PoE is available, or if the LAN socket is not connected to a PoE-capable network switch due to the conditions in the building, it is recommended to place a PoE switch between the LAN socket and the device to be connected. It is also possible to use a so-called PoE injector instead.

Measurement accuracy

This section contains questions that deal with the accuracy and stability of the measurement and control devices. Simple adjustments can already lead to significant improvements.

Why is the measurement signal outside the specifications?

The recommended calibration interval is one year. Devices calibrated more than one year ago are not guaranteed to meet the accuracy and stability criteria specified in the data sheet. Please contact silicon systems for regular recalibration.

After switching on an instrument, it is recommended to wait at least 30 to 60 minutes before the actual measurements are performed. This allows the device to reach thermal equilibrium and to perform accurate and stable measurements.

Why is the measurement signal noisy or not stable?

For the lowest possible noise level and highest stability, it is recommended to ground the GND signal with a cable that is as short and low in impedance as possible. The signal lines should also be kept as short as possible. It is strongly recommended to shield the signal lines, whereas the shield must be grounded directly at the connector of the device. Details can be found in the data sheets of the individual devices.

What should I do if the device has been exposed to overvoltage?

If a signal line is exposed to an overvoltage that is outside the range specified in the data sheet, permanent damage of the device can occur. It is therefore strongly recommended to send the device to silicon systems for a detailed functional check. Otherwise, neither the functionality nor the measured values can be guaranteed to be within the specified tolerances.
